Module 10 sur 10 220m 27 exam Qs

Tools, Estimating & Project Planning

Painter's tape, 5-in-1 tools, paint edgers, ladders, wet mil gauges, paint calculations, job estimation, color theory, and anti-graffiti coatings.

  • Identify essential painter's tools and their specific purposes
  • Explain the use of wet mil gauges for measuring film thickness
  • Calculate paint quantities based on surface area and spread rates
  • Apply color theory principles for proper color selection and matching
  • Describe specialty coatings including anti-graffiti and equipment maintenance

Leçon 1

Essential Painter's Tools & Equipment

Painter's Tape

Painter's tape is used to create clean edges and protect surfaces. Unlike standard masking tape, painter's tape is designed for clean removal without leaving adhesive residue or pulling up paint. Different types are rated for specific surfaces:

  • Blue tape - standard, for most painted and sealed surfaces (14-day clean removal)
  • Green tape - high adhesion, for textured surfaces and outdoor use
  • Delicate surface tape - yellow or purple, for fresh paint, wallpaper, and faux finishes

Tape Removal Timing

For the sharpest lines, remove painter's tape while the final coat is still slightly tacky. Pulling tape from fully dried paint can cause the paint to chip at the edge.

Essential Hand Tools

Tool Purpose
5-in-1 tool Scrape, clean rollers, open cans, set nails, clean cracks
Tack cloth Remove dust particles before painting
Paint can opener Open paint cans without damaging lids
Stir sticks Mix paint from bottom in figure-8 pattern
Drop cloths Protect floors and furniture from drips
Caulking gun Fill gaps and cracks before painting
Putty knife Apply and smooth patching compound

Extension Poles and Ladders

Extension poles attach to roller handles for reaching high walls and ceilings from the floor. They improve productivity and reduce the need for ladders in many situations.

When ladders are required:

  • Use step ladders on level surfaces only
  • Extension ladders must extend 3 feet above the landing point
  • Follow the 4:1 rule - base 1 foot from wall for every 4 feet of height
  • Never stand on the top two rungs of a step ladder
3 ft
Ladder Extension Above Landing
4:1
Ladder Angle Ratio (Base to Height)
3 Points
Minimum Contact Points When Climbing
Key Takeaway

Painter's tape creates clean edges and protects surfaces. A tack cloth removes dust particles before painting. Use extension poles for high areas and follow ladder safety rules - 4:1 angle, 3-foot extension above landing, and three points of contact.
