Equipment Installation & Foundations

Foundation types, grouting, anchor bolts, leveling screws, and proper equipment installation procedures.

  • Select appropriate foundation types and grouting methods
  • Install anchor bolts and leveling screws correctly
  • Level and align equipment on foundations

Leçon 1

Foundations, Grouting & Anchor Bolts

Foundation Types

Equipment foundations must support the weight and dynamic forces of the machinery:

Foundation Type Application Key Feature
Concrete block Most common for rotating equipment Mass dampens vibration
Steel frame Elevated equipment, platforms Lighter, allows access underneath
Spring-isolated Sensitive equipment, vibrating machines Reduces transmitted vibration
Inertia block Reciprocating equipment Extra mass absorbs impulse forces

Grouting

Grout fills the gap between the equipment baseplate and the concrete foundation:

  • Cementitious grout - traditional, non-shrink, cost-effective
  • Epoxy grout - higher strength, chemical resistant, more expensive
  • Pourable grout - self-leveling for uniform contact
1
Level Equipment
Use leveling screws or shims to set final position
2
Build Forms
Install grout forms around the baseplate perimeter
3
Pour Grout
Pour continuously from one side to avoid air pockets
4
Cure
Allow full cure before tightening anchor bolts

Anchor Bolts

  • L-bolts - cast into the concrete foundation
  • J-bolts - cast into concrete, hook shape
  • Sleeve anchors - drilled into existing concrete
  • Epoxy anchors - bonded into drilled holes with epoxy adhesive
⚠️

Grout Air Pockets

Always pour grout from one side only and let it flow under the baseplate. Pouring from multiple sides traps air pockets that create unsupported areas, leading to vibration and cracking.

Key Takeaway

Concrete block foundations are most common for rotating equipment. Use non-shrink grout to fill the gap between baseplate and foundation. Pour from one side only to prevent air pockets. Allow full cure before tightening anchor bolts.
