Residential Opener Safety Features
Mandatory Safety Features
Under CSA C260, every residential garage door opener sold in Canada must include the following safety features:
Wall Control Requirements
The wall-mounted control button must be installed:
- At a minimum height of 1.5 metres (5 feet) above the floor
- Within sight of the door
- Out of reach of small children
- With the safety warning label visible at the control location
Timer-to-Close Feature
Some openers include a timer-to-close feature that automatically closes the door after a set period. Under CSA standards, this feature must include:
- Visual and audible warning signals before closing begins
- Entrapment protection active during the auto-close cycle
- The ability for the homeowner to cancel the close cycle
Wall Control Height
The 1.5 metre minimum height for wall controls is a key exam number. This height keeps the control out of reach of young children who might activate the door unsupervised.
Residential openers must include entrapment protection, auto-reverse, emergency release, and warning labels. Wall controls must be mounted at least 1.5 metres above the floor and within sight of the door.
