Leçon 1

Signal Person Role & Qualifications

When a Signal Person Is Required

A signal person is required whenever the crane operator cannot see the load, the landing area, or the path of travel. Canadian regulations require a signal person when:

  • The operator's view is obstructed by structures, equipment, or terrain
  • The load is moving into an area the operator cannot observe directly
  • Site conditions or the lift plan require one
  • Working near hazards such as power lines or occupied areas

Qualification Requirements

A qualified signal person must:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of all standard hand signals
  • Maintain clear line of sight to the operator and the load
  • Wear high-visibility clothing
  • Be free from other duties during signaling
  • Understand the operations being directed

Operator-Signal Person Relationship

The operator must:

  • Follow signals from only the designated signal person
  • Stop all movement if any signal is unclear
  • Obey a stop signal from anyone on site
  • Not resume operations until communication is re-established after any interruption
💡

Key Exam Rule

Only one signal person directs the crane at a time, but anyone can give a stop signal. The operator must obey a stop from any person immediately.

Key Takeaway

A signal person is required when the operator cannot see the load or landing area. Only one qualified signal person directs the crane at a time, but anyone on site can signal an emergency stop and the operator must comply immediately.
