Pendant & Floor-Operated Controls
Floor-Operated Cranes
A floor-operated crane is one controlled by pendant or wireless controls by an operator on the floor. This is the most common type of overhead crane control in industrial settings. The operator stands at floor level and controls all crane motions using a control device connected to the crane.
Pendant Controls
A pendant is a control station that hangs from the crane by a cable or chain. It contains pushbuttons or switches for all crane motions: hoist up/down, trolley east/west, and bridge north/south. The pendant cable also carries the electrical signals to the crane's motor controllers.
Operator Position
The pendant operator position requires you to maintain a clear view, stay out of the load path and fall zone. Never stand directly under the load or between the load and a fixed object.
Proper Operator Positioning
When operating a pendant-controlled crane, the operator must:
- Maintain a clear view of the load at all times
- Stay out of the load path - never stand beneath a suspended load
- Stay out of the fall zone - the area where the load could land if it fell
- Keep clear of pinch points between the load and fixed objects
- Position for safe retreat - always have an escape route
Proper Pendant Storage
When the crane is not in use, the proper storage of pendant is to hang it safely to avoid damage and snagging. Never leave the pendant on the floor where it can be run over by forklifts or tripped on. Never wrap it around the hook, as this can damage the cable.
