LOTO Procedures
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is the safety procedure used to prevent accidental machine startup during maintenance. Before any maintenance, repair, or adjustment work on a machine, the worker must isolate all energy sources (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic) and apply a personal padlock and tag to the energy isolation device. Each worker applies their own individual lock - no one else may remove it.
PPE in the Machine Shop
Standard PPE for machine shop work includes safety glasses with side shields, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection near loud equipment. However, certain PPE items are dangerous around rotating machinery.
Gloves should NOT be worn when operating a lathe or any machine with rotating workpieces. Gloves can catch on spinning parts and pull the operator's hand into the machine. Similarly, loose clothing, ties, jewelry, and long hair must be secured. Safety glasses are always required.

Gloves must NOT be worn when operating lathes, drill presses, or any machine with rotating parts. Gloves can snag and pull your hand into the work.
The primary purpose of LOTO is to prevent accidental machine startup during maintenance. Never wear gloves when operating a lathe or any rotating machinery.
