Pre-Operation Inspections & Daily Checks

Walk-around procedures, hydraulic system checks, daily inspection items, function checks, and operator manual importance.

  • Describe the purpose and sequence of a pre-start walk-around inspection
  • Identify hydraulic system check points including fluid level, leaks, and hose condition
  • Explain gauge readings, DEF monitoring, and cold weather considerations
  • Describe why the operator manual must be accessible and its role in safe operation

Lección 1

Pre-Start Walk-Around Inspection

Purpose of the Walk-Around

The pre-start walk-around inspection is the single most important safety task an operator performs before starting any piece of heavy equipment. The purpose is to identify defects, leaks, loose components, and safety issues before operation. Every machine must be inspected at the start of each shift - no exceptions.

1
Approach
Look under machine for leaks, puddles, damage
2
Circle
Walk around checking tires, tracks, pins, guards
3
Check Fluids
Engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, fuel, DEF
4
Cab Check
Controls, mirrors, seat belt, fire extinguisher

Walk-Around Sequence

Begin by approaching the machine from a distance and looking underneath for fluid puddles or debris. Then walk completely around the machine, checking each side methodically. Look for cracked or damaged hoses, loose bolts, missing guards, damaged steps or handholds, and any signs of structural damage.

What to Look For

During the walk-around, check tires or tracks for damage, proper inflation, or correct tension. Inspect pins and linkages for wear or missing retainers. Verify that guards and shields are in place. Check all lights, mirrors, and cameras for damage or obstruction. Confirm the back-up alarm functions by having someone listen while the machine is started.

⚠️

Never Skip the Walk-Around

Many equipment incidents could have been prevented by a thorough pre-start inspection. A missing pin, cracked hose, or low fluid level caught early can prevent a catastrophic failure during operation.

Key Takeaway

The pre-start walk-around inspection identifies defects, leaks, loose components, and safety issues before operation. It must be performed at the start of every shift without exception.
