Canadian Gas Codes & Regulatory Framework
Why Gas Codes Exist
Gas fitting is one of the most heavily regulated trades in Canada. The reason is straightforward - improper gas work can result in explosions, fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and death. Every province and territory enforces gas codes to protect public safety, and every gasfitter must know the regulatory framework before touching a single fitting.
The foundation of gas fitting regulation in Canada is the National Building Code and the CSA B149 series of standards. The CSA B149.1:25 covers natural gas and propane installation, while CSA B149.2:25 covers propane storage and handling. These are the 2025 editions, which are the current editions adopted by provincial and territorial authorities. These national standards are adopted (sometimes with amendments) by each province and territory through their own legislation.
Certification Is Mandatory
Provincial or territorial gas fitter certification is required to perform gas fitting work in Canada. Working without proper certification is illegal and carries significant penalties. The Red Seal endorsement provides interprovincial mobility.
Provincial Regulation
Each province and territory has a Technical Standards and Safety Authority (or equivalent body) that administers gas fitting regulation. In Ontario it is the TSSA, in Alberta it is Safety Codes, in British Columbia it is Technical Safety BC. These bodies issue licenses, conduct inspections, and enforce compliance.
The Red Seal program is administered by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA). Passing the Red Seal exam demonstrates that a gasfitter meets the national standard of competence and allows them to work across provincial boundaries without additional testing.
The exam content for the Red Seal IP (Interprovincial) exam is now aligned to the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), which replaced the former National Occupational Analysis (NOA) framework. The RSOS defines the blocks, lines, and competencies that structure all current Red Seal exam blueprints. Candidates studying for the IP exam should reference the RSOS for Gasfitter to understand the exam weighting by competency area.

Gasfitter Class A and Class B - Both Fully Integrated Red Seal Trades
Both Gasfitter - Class A and Gasfitter - Class B are designated Red Seal trades under the Interprovincial Standards Program. Class A gasfitters work with higher-pressure systems, larger commercial and industrial equipment, and more complex appliance categories. Class B gasfitters typically work with lower-pressure residential and light commercial systems. Each class has its own RSOS, its own IP exam, and its own apprenticeship program, but both carry full Red Seal recognition, providing interprovincial mobility within the respective class.
The Safety Priority
The most important consideration in gas fitting is always safety of the installation and occupants. This principle overrides cost, speed, and convenience in every decision a gasfitter makes. On the Red Seal exam, when asked about the primary concern in gas fitting, the answer is always safety.
