Acclimation & Moisture Content Requirements

Why Acclimation Matters

Acclimation is the process of allowing hardwood flooring to adjust to the temperature and humidity conditions of the installation site before it is installed. Wood is a hygroscopic material - it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air, expanding and contracting as it does. Installing hardwood that has not acclimated causes dimensional changes after installation that lead to buckling, cupping, or gapping.

Moisture Content Measurement

Moisture content (MC) is measured with a moisture meter - either a pin-type (resistance) or pinless (capacitance) model. The pin-type meter inserts two pins into the wood and measures electrical resistance between them. The pinless meter uses electromagnetic signals and does not damage the wood surface.

The critical measurement is the difference between the wood moisture content and the subfloor moisture content. This difference should not exceed 2 to 4 percentage points depending on the manufacturer's specifications.

⚠️

Always Check MC Before Installation

Moisture content must be verified with a moisture meter before starting installation. Relying on acclimation time alone is not sufficient - environmental conditions vary, and only a meter reading confirms the wood is ready.

Acclimation Conditions

During acclimation, the building HVAC system should be operating at normal occupancy conditions - typically 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with 30% to 50% relative humidity. The hardwood should be removed from packaging and stacked with spacers to allow air circulation on all sides.

Key Takeaway

Hardwood must be acclimated to the job site before installation. Ideal moisture content is 6 to 9%, and the difference between wood and subfloor MC must not exceed 2 to 4%. Always verify with a moisture meter.
