Lesson 1
CWB Quality System and Supervisor Role
Company Quality System
Under CSA W47.1, every certified company must maintain a quality management system that includes:
- Approved welding procedures (WPS and PQR)
- Qualified welders with current WPQ certificates
- A designated welding supervisor with CWB-recognized credentials
- Documented inspection procedures
- Records of all consumables, procedures, and welder qualifications
Welding Supervisor Responsibilities
The welding supervisor is responsible for ensuring all welding meets code requirements:
- Verifying welders are qualified for the work assigned
- Ensuring correct WPS is being followed
- Inspecting work in progress and completed welds
- Managing consumable storage and traceability
- Authorizing weld repairs
- Maintaining all documentation for CWB audits
Supervisor Authority
The welding supervisor has the authority to stop production if welding does not comply with the WPS or code. This authority is a CWB requirement - the supervisor cannot be overruled by production managers on quality matters.
Every CWB-certified company needs a qualified welding supervisor who is responsible for procedures, welder qualification, inspection, and documentation. The supervisor has authority to stop production for quality issues and cannot be overruled on code compliance.
