Essential Painter's Tools & Equipment
Painter's Tape
Painter's tape is used to create clean edges and protect surfaces. Unlike standard masking tape, painter's tape is designed for clean removal without leaving adhesive residue or pulling up paint. Different types are rated for specific surfaces:
- Blue tape - standard, for most painted and sealed surfaces (14-day clean removal)
- Green tape - high adhesion, for textured surfaces and outdoor use
- Delicate surface tape - yellow or purple, for fresh paint, wallpaper, and faux finishes
Tape Removal Timing
For the sharpest lines, remove painter's tape while the final coat is still slightly tacky. Pulling tape from fully dried paint can cause the paint to chip at the edge.

Extension Poles and Ladders
Extension poles attach to roller handles for reaching high walls and ceilings from the floor. They improve productivity and reduce the need for ladders in many situations.
When ladders are required:
- Use step ladders on level surfaces only
- Extension ladders must extend 3 feet above the landing point
- Follow the 4:1 rule - base 1 foot from wall for every 4 feet of height
- Never stand on the top two rungs of a step ladder
