Airless Spray Pumps & Components
How Airless Spray Works
Airless spray systems use high hydraulic pressure (1,500-3,500 PSI) to atomize paint without compressed air. A pump draws paint directly from the can or bucket and forces it through a small orifice in the spray tip, where the pressure drop atomizes the material into a fine spray pattern.
Key components of an airless spray system:
- Pump - piston or diaphragm type, driven by electric motor or gas engine
- Inlet strainer - filters large debris from paint before it enters the pump
- High-pressure hose - rated for the system's maximum pressure
- Spray gun - houses the tip, trigger, and safety guard
- Spray tip - determines pattern width and material flow rate
- Tip filter - catches particles that could clog the tip
Advantages of Airless Spray
Airless systems are the most productive method for large-area painting:
- Covers large areas 4-10 times faster than brush and roller
- Handles heavy-bodied materials (primers, elastomerics, texture coats)
- Produces a thick, even film in a single pass
- No compressed air supply required
Injection Hazard
Airless spray guns operate at pressures high enough to inject paint through skin. Never point the gun at any body part. Never attempt to clear a clogged tip with your finger. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate hospital treatment.
