Vent Termination Clearances & Rules
Roof Termination
Category I vents that terminate through the roof must extend above the roof surface by a minimum height that depends on roof pitch and distance from the ridge. Key requirements:
- Minimum 2 feet above any roof surface within 10 feet horizontally
- Must have an approved vent cap to prevent rain and debris entry
- Must maintain clearance from combustible roof materials
Sidewall Termination Clearances
Category IV sidewall terminations require clearances from:

Snow and Ice
In Canada, sidewall vent terminations must be installed above the expected snow line. A vent buried in snow cannot exhaust combustion products, causing CO to back up into the building. Check termination height against local snowfall data.
Roof vents must extend at least 2 feet above any roof surface within 10 feet. Sidewall terminations require clearances from windows, meters, intakes, and walkways per B149.1. In Canada, terminations must be above the expected snow line.
