Module 10 of 10 180m 10 exam Qs

Vent Termination & Field Practice

Roof vent termination clearances, regulator vent requirements, gas odor response, field safety practices, and appliance connector installation.

  • Apply vent termination clearance rules from CSA B149.1
  • Implement regulator vent and gas leak safety procedures
  • Follow field safety practices for gas work

Lesson 1

Vent Termination Clearances & Rules

Roof Termination

Category I vents that terminate through the roof must extend above the roof surface by a minimum height that depends on roof pitch and distance from the ridge. Key requirements:

  • Minimum 2 feet above any roof surface within 10 feet horizontally
  • Must have an approved vent cap to prevent rain and debris entry
  • Must maintain clearance from combustible roof materials

Sidewall Termination Clearances

Category IV sidewall terminations require clearances from:

Feature Minimum Clearance
Window or door (openable) Per B149.1 table
Gas meter or regulator vent 1 metre (minimum typical)
Adjacent building Per B149.1 table
Mechanical air intake Per B149.1 table
Public walkway Per B149.1 table
⚠️

Snow and Ice

In Canada, sidewall vent terminations must be installed above the expected snow line. A vent buried in snow cannot exhaust combustion products, causing CO to back up into the building. Check termination height against local snowfall data.

Key Takeaway

Roof vents must extend at least 2 feet above any roof surface within 10 feet. Sidewall terminations require clearances from windows, meters, intakes, and walkways per B149.1. In Canada, terminations must be above the expected snow line.
