Drive System Troubleshooting
Chain and belt tension problems, trolley release malfunctions, gear set failures, rail alignment, drive coupling issues, and travel limit faults.
- Diagnose chain and belt tension problems
- Troubleshoot trolley release and engagement issues
- Identify gear set and drive coupling failures
- Resolve travel limit and force setting faults
Lesson 1
Chain & Belt Tension Problems
Chain Tension Issues
Chain Too Loose
Symptoms: Chain slaps against rail, skips on sprocket, jerky movement
Cause: Normal stretching, loose adjustment bolt
Fix: Tighten chain adjuster to achieve 6-12 mm sag at midpoint
Chain Too Tight
Symptoms: Motor strains, premature wear, excessive noise
Cause: Over-tightening during adjustment
Fix: Loosen adjuster until proper sag is achieved
Belt Drive Issues
Belt drives have fewer tension problems but can develop:
- Tooth skip - worn teeth on the belt or sprocket cause the belt to jump
- Belt cracking - age and UV exposure deteriorate the belt material
- Belt tracking - the belt rides to one side of the sprocket
Belt vs. Chain Diagnosis
Chain problems cause metallic clicking and slapping. Belt problems cause rubber squealing or thumping. The sound alone often identifies the drive type and problem.
Chain tension should produce 6-12 mm of sag at the rail midpoint. Too loose causes slapping and skipping; too tight strains the motor. Belt drives fail through tooth wear, cracking, and tracking issues. Sound is a key diagnostic indicator.
