Pre-Energization Verification & Torque Checks

Before Turning It On

Before energizing any EVSE installation, a series of pre-energization checks must be completed. These checks verify that the installation is safe, code-compliant, and ready for operation. Energizing an installation with wiring errors, loose connections, or incorrect configurations can cause equipment damage, fire, or injury.

The recommended pre-energization checklist includes:

  1. Verify conductor sizing matches the EVSE load and breaker rating
  2. Confirm breaker type - dual-pole, common-trip, correct amperage
  3. Check all connections are tight and properly terminated
  4. Verify EGC continuity from EVSE to panel ground bus
  5. Inspect for physical damage to conductors, conduit, and enclosures
  6. Confirm voltage at the panel matches EVSE requirements (208V or 240V)

Torque Verification

The recommended torque check practice is to use a calibrated torque wrench or torque screwdriver set to the manufacturer's specified value for each lug and terminal. Over-torquing damages terminals; under-torquing allows connections to loosen under thermal cycling.

Torque-sealing or marking is sometimes used to provide visual evidence that connections have been properly torqued. A small mark (paint, marker, or torque seal) is placed across the lug and conductor after torquing, so any future loosening is visible during inspection.

Why Re-Torque After Initial Load

After the EVSE has been energized and operated under load for the first time, connections may settle due to thermal cycling. The recommended practice is to check torque on lugs after initial load - typically after the first week of operation. This catches connections that loosened slightly during the initial heating and cooling cycles.
