ASME B30.2 - Overhead & Gantry Cranes
The Governing Standard
Every overhead crane operator must understand the standards that govern safe operation. ASME B30.2-2022 is the current edition of the primary safety standard covering overhead and gantry cranes. Published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, this standard establishes minimum requirements for design, construction, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and operation of overhead cranes. The 2022 edition includes updated requirements for crane owner responsibilities, including establishing medical and physical fitness criteria for operators (visual acuity, depth perception, and physical capability), as well as clearer load testing and documentation protocols for newly commissioned hoists.

When the exam asks "What does ASME B30.2 cover?" - the answer is overhead and gantry cranes. Do not confuse it with B30.5 (mobile cranes) or B30.3 (tower cranes).
